Made to order Snakestone pendant

Made to order, pendant only.
Weighs approx 3.4g, size of snakestone without bail included in 1.3cm tall and 1.1cm.

Please allow up to 5 weeks for this piece to be made and shipped, this gives me the time to individually cast your Snakestone pendant in recycled sterling silver or 9ct gold and get it fully hallmarked by the Sheffield Assay Office. The back of the Snakestone pendant has a flat circle where the hallmarks will be, shown in the last photo. I’ll update with a photo of the hallmarks once I have the first pendant back. The piece is cast from a real ammonite fossil from Whitby, I sculpted the head in clay and attached it on. The finish on the silver is oxidised to give depth and contrast. Bail has a 4mm opening for chain, silver chains are available to purchase separately.

The legend of the snakestone starts in Anglo-Saxon Britain with Saint Hilda, the first abbess at the monastery at Whitby. The story goes that she was tasked with founding an Abbey at Whitby but the town was over-run with snakes. Which at that time were seen as evil and associated with the devil. Hilda chopped off their heads and cast a spell to turn them into stone as she hurled them over the cliff. Victorians used this legend to carve snake heads onto the ammonite fossils found at Whitby to sell to tourists as proof of the miracle.
